Phone Number autoformat

I'm finding the phone number field to be very frustrating. I entered a Dubai number in the format +971 55 235 #### and it changed it to 55235####. This removes the Dubai international code and also removed the spacing. This feature should either a) leave my formatting as is, or b) allow us to enter a country code and then the number so at least that much is kept with proper formatting.

Having the same issue as Vittorio below. Even when I remove it from the field, it gets added back almost immediately.

Avoid corruption of phone numbers and incorrect API calls. When merging contacts, an additional "+1" is automatically added. In another case, while the number is correctly stored, the API call repeats the international code twice.

For some reason, no matter what I enter in the UX, if I export my contacts, they are all over the place. This makes it difficult to work with the data without a bunch of processing.
Perhaps the exports should be normalized in exports and the API responses and have display/formatting in the ux.
Ideally in Google contacts, this is stored as a standard country formatting, so when I view it share a contact in my phone, it matches my local number formatting
